User Review:
Possitive
Now I’m no professional photographer, but I am picky about how my pictures look. I have a good eye, and can be very anal about details in my photos. I’ve seen this camera get some bad reviews lately, and I am really perplexed by this. I looked at lots of other cameras. some costing more and some less. This was by far the best point and shoot pocket-able mega zoom out there, I thought. I read some negative reviews about sluggish focus and blurred images from here and from Best Buy’s web site. I don’t know if a bad batch of cameras went out? I did have some focus issues right out of the box when I started using the camera; but after inspecting the camera I noticed a nice big greasy finger print right on the lens. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t from me, but I wouldn’t bet my life on it though. After cleaning the lens, I have had no focus issues. The only thing I can say about the focus is that when indoors, sometimes you need to take a step back and use more zoom to get focus lock, and sometimes you might need to take a step forward and use less zoom to achieve focus lock. This happens rarely though. Most of the time my S9100 focuses fast and true. Low light shots are great indoors and out. Auto mode works pretty good for about 90% of my shots, and the rest I use the various setting or scene modes to capture the shot I want. Now I’m not saying every shot I take is perfect and clear. As with any camera digital or film. You have to expect a few bad shots. That’s why I always try to take more that one shot when possible. the lcd is gorgeous. I find that if the pictures look good on the camera, they will look good on my computer. Of course different computers will yield different results. On my laptop the pictures look a bit drab or dull, but on my desk top with a high res monitor the pictures are real vivid and pleasing to the eye. I’ve had the camera now for almost two weeks and I love it. The long zoom is great, but even with image stabilizing enabled you will need a steady hand for clear shots at higher zoom levels. The video from the camera plays nice and smooth on my computer when I use windows media player; but when I tried quick time the video was choppy. In video mode you can take pics while recording, which is nice. There is no shutter sound when you take the picture, therefore no shutter sound in the video. You will however hear the zoom lens in your videos under quiet situations. It’s not very loud, but it is noticeable. The camera starts up quick with little delay from shot to shot. I do recommend a class 6 or higher memory card. It made a big difference for me in burst mode. The camera can fire off 5 shots at a rate of 9.5 fps, but write times with a class 4 were painfully slow. I had to wait a good 9 to 10 seconds before my next shot. I am now using a class 10 and that time has been cut down to about 3 to 4 seconds. A bit of advice on memory cards. Make sure you look at the minimum and maximum write times. Not all class tens or sixes are equal. I saw a lot of class 10 cards with the same write speeds as higher end class 6 cards. I did upload a bunch of pictures so everyone can judge for themselves on quality. I guess the best advice I can give is try some test shots using various scene modes for other than there intended purpose. That’s what I try to do when possible. I’ll take a few pictures of the same shot using different settings. Then I view them on the computer later to see what looks best. Some other things I would like to touch on. A complaint I heard a lot about on the S8100 is the battery level wasn’t displayed until the camera needed charging. It is now displayed always on the S9100. Another complaint was about flash placement on the S8100. It’s in the same place for this one, but for me there is still enough room behind the flash for my finger. The flash no longer pops up automatically. It now pops up by activating a little switch on the side of the camera. This I actually like. I never cared for auto pop up flashes. Some people have complained about placement of the shutter button. That of course is an individual preference and shouldn’t effect a rating. I like where it is on this camera, no problems at all. The other buttons and dials all seem to be good places and easy to activate or use. The camera itself is pretty easy to use. The interface is simple and clean. Settings are easy to get to and not buried under five or six sub menus. All in all, this is a great little camera.

Negative
I have returned this camera. They should not have changed the image stabilization. It would not take clear photos. And when I used the zoom, it didn’t focus. I had intended to buy the Nikon Coolpix s8100, but when I saw that this new model was out, I bought it instead. BIG MISTAKE! I have now purchased the s8100 and am very happy with it. I don’t understand why Nikon has put out something so disappointing.

It also allows for macro capturing as near as 0.4 inches!

Beautiful pictures in not so stunning shooting conditions.

No matter if you’re looking at a midnight sky line or zooming in on a hang-glider in a sunlight saturated skies, Nikon allows you to get extraordinary pictures and movies. Having its 12.1-megapixel backside-illuminated CMOS sensor, dual image processors and Nikon’s EXPEED C2 image processing engine, this frees you to shoot extremely in depth images with minimum noises and distortions.

The COOLPIX P500 is fantastic for shooting high-speed actions, therefore you’re guaranteed to catch the quickest skate boarders, skiers, and windsurfers. It’s equipped with ISO speeds up to 3200 and equipped with a five-way Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization System which cuts down on the streaky pictures associated with unstable digital cameras. The COOLPIX P500 also features a motion detector in which recognizes moving subjects then modifies the camera’s settings to make sure that you won’t miss a frame of the actions.

Whatever you need to take, the COOLPIX P500 is ready.

You’ll never ever miss a shot using this flexible digital camera since it begins right up, provides a fast auto-focus, as well as shoots out 5 shots within roughly 1 second-at full resolution. In addition, several Continuous Modes permit a number of high-speed shooting choices to a blasting 120 fps (reduced resolution).

Whenever a one picture just isn’t adequate, the extremely versatile COOLPIX P500 provides a One-Touch record button that allows you to take Full HD (1080p) movies at 30fps even while recording audio with a built-in stereo system microphone. It’s ideal for sporting occasions since it can record high-speed action in slow motion, capturing action missed by the human eye. The COOLPIX P500 even offers an HDMI-CEC output for easy playback in your HDTV or computer-so right now it’s as simple to look at your own videos as it’s to shoot all of them.

Positive Feedback:
I went out and shot another 200+ photos this morning.
To keep this review readable I will edit out my rant towards those that posted video reviews within days of the release notice of this camera.
A few more notes on thing I’ve “discovered” while shooting today.
I shot a couple short vids, used flash, turned off the camera multiple times and allowed it to hibernate many times, zoomed in and out and still the camera showed 1/4 of battery life left. Obviously if you’re going to use this in a photo rich environment, carry a spare battery. Always better safe than sorry.
Some reviewers said they couldn’t find any usable photos using HDR. I found it more than usable and will attach a couple photos to allow comparison.
I was using a grade 6 SD card today. That is the minimum Nikon recommends. It took approximately 13 seconds for the camera to process an HDR photo and a couple more seconds to write it to the card. Camera continues to show practically no lag time when taking standard shots. Only panoramas and HDR slow things down, with HDR certainly taking the longest. Nikon does have a progress bar that appears across the bottom so you don’t think the camera is locked up.
While using full (or near full) zoom and in Auto mode, the camera did a fair amount of searching to focus on an item while in MACRO. Since my previous Lumix TZ5 was less than optimal in low light focusing, I am used to using either PROGRAM or Aperture priority on the Nikon to achieve focus on the intended target.
In what i consider “medium light” the camera refused to allow an aperture setting to maintain an narrow field of focus.
I’m certainly not down-grading my rating of the camera. I like it very much.
Just remember it is not a DSLR. In comparison it has a tiny sensor. There are always trade-offs. I am more convinced that this camera will suit my intended uses very well. The VR at extreme zoom still impresses me, as does the low light sensitivity and noise. Yes, there’s noise, even at 560 ISO. It’s not distracting however. Wait for the camera geeks to test and publish their data (i.e. dpreview.com) to get the hard statistics. My over all impression still stands and I’m glad I took a gamble and pre-ordered this camera and was on the initial round of deliveries from Amazon.

Negative Feedback:
I have just returned my second camera for the same reason, the battery goes dead in the camera in less than 24 hours.
I have visited the Nikon website and found I am not alone with this problem. I have replaced the battery in both camera’s with original Nikon’s and an aftermarket brand, they all go dead in the camera. There is definitely some wrong in the camera that is draining the battery.
It is too bad Nikon is not addressing this problem, with a recall or a fix, because this is great camera, easy to use, super fast, with lots of great features,so unless you are prepared to buy an extra battery and have it charged and ready to use and are willing to change batteries every time you want to use the camera, wait until they correct the problem.

Positive
even though i just got this camera so far it is amazing…we have a “real” professional camera that is too hard to carry around. i have a baby so i take a bunch of picts with no time for posing! so far this has been an excellent camera even in not good lighting. and it takes picts way quicker then these little cameras used to!
definitely a grt buy!!!

Negative
HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. Just purchased for Christmas present. Good thing I checked to make sure camera worked before giving as present. I charged the battery, turned camera on, and LENS DOES NOT WORK. Lens retracts after a second or two and “LENS ERROR” message appears on LCD screen. Removed and reinstalled battery and tried a few more times…still same lens error. Sending back to Amazon. Will purchase another brand camera.

Sharper results with five advanced Nikon image stabilizing features*1 Nikon’s 4-way VR Image Stabilization System utilizes Optical lens shift image stabilization system to help produce blur-free images. High ISO 3200 capability allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement and camera shake. And, Nikon’s original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically shoots a series of sequential frames and saves the one with the sharpest focus.

Nikon’s Smart Portrait System with Skin Softening
Face-priority AF helps produce more satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure for as many as 12 faces in the framed shot. Skin Softening function detects and analyzes a framed subject’s skin, and then adjusts smoothness to produce enhanced results.

Smile Timer automatically releases the shutter when the subject smiles, while its Blink Proof function shoots two sequential frames, then saves the one in which the subject’s eyes are widest open. Blink Warning presents an alert when it suspects that someone in the shot has blinked. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.

Intelligent automated shooting modes that promote carefree shooting
Nikon’s Scene Auto Selector makes it faster and easier to capture the moment by eliminating the need to manually select a scene mode to match the intended shot. This intelligent function determines the subject, analyzes the surrounding settings, and then automatically selects the appropriate scene mode for optimal results.

Subject Tracking enhances the shooting experience by following the subject’s movement to ensure clear focus and quick response when that special shutter opportunity presents itself.

Quick Retouch
Quick Retouch automatically adjusts the contrast and saturation of selected photos to create an enhanced copy with the right finishing touch.

One-touch HD movie recording
A single press of a button lets you begin recording 720p high definition movies with ease and speed that helps ensure you capture the moving moment.

12.2-megapixel CCD sensor for stunning image quality.

5x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom-Nikkor Glass Lens. Versatile 28-140mm lens ranges wide to capture landscapes, zooms in to get close to the action. In the Nikkor tradition of precision optics, the high-quality glass lens delivers superb color and razor-sharp results.

4-way VR Image Stabilization System

Optical VR Image Stabilization by lens shift minimizes the effect of camera shake.

Motion Detection automatically detects moving subjects and adjusts shutter speed and ISO to compensate for camera shake and subject movement.

High ISO up to 3200 at full resolution for optimum results when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects.

Positive
I have had 2 compact camera’s and boy have they been horrible. This camera was more than I wanted to spend but it was worth it! It is not going to be one of those camera’s that take great pictures in fast motion, but it does take pictures when someone is moving which is more than I can say for other small cameras. The other feature that I really liked was it did not take FOREVER to take a picure in the dark and for me to view it. If you want an awesome camera, well you will have to buy the larger more expenive ones, but for an easy to carry and understand, good camera, this one I liked.

Negative
I’ve had a Canon Powershot for years, but it was recently stolen so I decided to try the Nikon Coolpix. I actually bought one of the more expensive ones thinking it would be one of the best…boy was I wrong. This camera is awful. Most of our pictures are blown out from poor exposure or blurry because the flash doesn’t activate when it should. When it does manage to have decent exposure, the pictures don’t even look that good. The large touch screen is the best feature, however, it’s a little slow and sometimes I would accidently touch the screen while I was taking a pic and change the settings. Luckily I bought this camera from Costco so we can return it. I’m switching back to a Canon.

What S8100 Can Do?
The COOLPIX S8100 enables you to capture beautiful handheld portraits at night. In Night Portrait mode, the camera first shoots a rapid sequence of exposures at shutter speeds fast enough to capture the background cleanly followed by an additional exposure using the flash to capture your subject. The exposures are then merged into a single composite image, producing a beautiful image of both your subject and the background. It achieves this by combining the image-stabilizing advantages of lens shift VR with the ability of its new backside Illumination CMOS image sensor to rapidly expose and merge a series of shots.

Pros

Coolpix was my very first digital camera in the late 1990′s. I’ve always believed that of the Japanese brands, which includes Canon, Fuji, and Panasonic, the Nikon automatic cameras had the best overall response to consumer needs. This is important for us old 35mm SLR users. When they took the manual ability out of our hands, we had to rely on “auto” technology. Unfortunately, most spontaneous shots are lost while the camera is trying to focus. Nikon has fixed that with this camera… sort of. You still have a very slight delay. However, the auto focus is the fastest I have ever seen in a camera of this type. I was able to catch every action shot of my son’s friends as they used their skateboards. I only wish I had “slo-mo” video (are you listening Nikon?).

Color reproduction: On the whole, the colors are extremely accurate, unless you photograph something like a display (I took pictures of my hi-def television screen and most of the colors were on the cool side). Outside in daylight, I found the yellows spot on (which are usually the most difficult to reproduce). With the fall leaves, all of the colors came back very accurate and bright. Inside in normal light conditions, without the flash, I found the colors slightly warm. You can correct for most light situations with this camera. The night shooting surprised me the most. Nightscenes come alive with the night mode. It’s fun to shoot someone and have the background turn out. It gives the shot a professional look. Overall, I found the colors far more accurate than my previous Canon or Panasonic reproduced.

Clarity: With 12 megapixels to play with, you can zoom to your hearts content. I found it easy to trim and crop with no loss… do I need to repeat that? NO LOSS in picture quality. Usually when you crop and extend the image, the grain comes out. Not with this camera (in most cases, depending how much you need to crop).

Ease of use: As with most cameras in this class, you can basically start shooting right out of the box with very little instruction. This camera is as easy to use as are most automatic cameras. With its complex lens system, this one has about 2-3 cms of width. My wife’s camera is thinner, but she cannot compete with the 10x optical zoom of this camera’s beautiful large lens.

Now for the really cool part…

Shooting in 1080p with such a small camera is an incredible experience, because, let’s face it… this is nearly 35mm quality (and we’re talking motion picture film). You can blow this puppy up and put it on the big screen and see a beautiful image. I had this camera in all kinds of places and making shots I never thought possible years ago when I attended film school. Zooming during a shot is important if you track and zoom at the same time. The auto focus feature also allows the cameraperson to move in on an object and stay in focus. With wide angle, I could walk and shoot and had hardly any “jerk” during playback. Oh, if I’d only had this in film school… WOW! When we played the image back on our 55 inch LED 240hz TV, the clear sharp colorful image just blew us away.

In conclusion, this is an all purpose and very versatile camera that will be perfect to preserve family memories, take along on vacation, or make professional style videos at far less cost. I can’t say enough great things about this camera. Lastly, about the placement of the flash, the manual even suggests how to hold the camera. When you adjust your left hand, you’ll find it easy to take flash pix without interference. Have fun.

Cons:

I have returned the camera today after observing two issues that are dealbreaker for me. We finally had a bright sunny day today and I took some videos to compare against my 3 year old Canon Powershot TX1 that shoots 720p. I also received my mini-HDMI cable so I could watch the video on my 42″ LCD TV directly without post-processing thru Apple TV box.

ISSUE #1: The video keeps going out of focus while I zoom or pan – whether I set center, weighted focus and/or single AF or continuous AF. The recorded video looks really bad. On the other hand my TX1 stays rock steady with the focus.

ISSUE #2: There is a loud zoom motor noise that gets recorded in the clip. I initially thought that continuous AF or Image Stabilization is causing the noise. I put the camera on a tripod and disabled continuous AF and the noise remained and it was clearly there when I operated the zoom.

The still photography feature of the camera is stunning, but video is important for me as well as I want to carry only one camera on my travels.

I love the 3″ LCD on this camera, but the two issues pushed me over the edge.

Original review below:

This is my 1st Nikon. I have always purchased Canon ever since I used a Canon A1 35mm film SLR nearly 30 yrs back. I own a Canon Digital SLR, Canon DV Cam, Canon Powershot TX1. Most of my photography during travel/vacation has been with the TX1 shooting both stills as well as 720p Video which I edit on my Mac and then stream thru my Apple TV.

I have been looking forward to replacing my TX1 with a camera that is:
- compact like TX1
- bigger and better LCD screen (TX1 has very tiny one)
- shoots 1080p with full optical zoom (not handicapped like Canon has done with all their 1080p shooting compact cameras that don’t allow optical zooming during video recording)
- good range of optical zoom
- image stabilized lens
- reasonable number of pixels
- better low light shooting
- shoot moving objects
- separate shutter button and video recording buttons – this is very useful when the subject is not waiting for you to fiddle with the rotary selector as with most cameras (except for TX1 which had this feature).

It is important for me give all this preamble to relate to what my expectations were from this camera.

Gave up on Canon finally, looked into Panasonic ZX7 – didn’t like the reviews and waited patiently for the release of Nikon S8100. Received it today. Have taken some shots and here is my first impression.

1. I am happy with the image quality of the stills
2. Great quality of 1080p video (haven’t tried the 720p mode as yet)
3. Optical zoom is very good (the rate of zooming slows down during video recording)
4. Controls are simple to use
5. Very fast focus response
6. Very fast start time
7. Very good image stabilization
8. Face detection works very well (even on images on TV)
9. Very good build quality (feels robust) – just like my TX1

Only negative: The position of the flash. It is the place where you would normally grip the camera with your left index finger. If the flash wasn’t a pop up type, this could have been avoided.

Overall, I am very happy with the camera. Will move on to try the remaining features in the next few days. Have to get hold of the mini-HDMI cable to test the direct to TV playback of 1080p video.

The motto of the Nikon Coolpix P7000 is “Luxury Ultimate Compact High Performance”.
The image quality on the P7000 really blew me away. When I first opened up a file on the computer screen, there was a lot of detail, a lot of fine gradation. Image quality that I really had never seen from a compact. The reason for the great image quality is the fact that the sensor is a little larger than most compact cameras. Plus there’s 10 megapixels on that sensor. So, that makes for lovely gradation.

The P7000 has a tremendous zoom range. Starting at wide-angle 28mm, going all the way to 200 in such a compact body. Plus the f/2.8 at wide-angle makes it great for getting some available light in a low-light situation.

I like the ergonomics of this camera. You have a lot of dedicated dials and knobs. If you are used to using a D-SLR, you’ll find a lot of similar controls here. This camera was designed for photographers. The first compact camera that won my heart, and won a place in my camera bag.

Customer Review Coolpix P7000:

Good Review:

Let’s get the facts out first. I’ve been a Nikon shooter for several decades, currently with a D300 (haven’t made the leap yet to full frame, but that’s next). I’m an amateur, but shoot at a pro level. My focus is on music and sports photography, and I like to have a good camera with me when I travel (my last ride-along P&S has been a Lumix DMC-TZ5). I shoot in a variety of conditions, but what I need must a) provides high quality images, b) be really portable (fits in my purse, can get into concerts that ban DSLRs unless you’re shooting on assignment) c) have a longer lens option (200mm is ‘table stakes’) and d) provide the flexibility to twiddle the dials to find the best combo of ISO-aperture-shutter speed for a particular situation. Having HD capability is a nice-to-have.

I’ve been shopping for a new P&S easily for a year. Got interested and then uninterested in the Canon G11/G12/S95 because the lens is too short (even the extenders don’t push it out far enough). Similar higher-end P&S cameras don’t have the length I was looking for, or didn’t fit the size criteria (ruled out the ‘super zooms’ largely because of this).

Nikon got my attention first with the P100 – but I read about image quality issues. When I learned about the P7000, I was intrigued. Could Nikon overcome its perceived issues and produce a P&S that makes picky photo people happy?

I made the plunge and bought the P7000. After reading a few more reviews and having a burst of post-purchase cognitive dissonance, the best plan was to just take the new acquisition out and A:B it against my D300 and the Lumix in a variety of conditions.

I’m glad I did. First impression: lots of dials to set and menus to learn, so to make it easy I just left it on the ‘green’ setting and let the camera make the decisions. Immediately it was clear that the Lumix’s photo quality wasn’t even in the same class as the P7000 (it looked good until you held it up against the others). The P7000′s quality should be compared against the DSLR class.

After carrying a DSLR rig around, the P7000 seemed like a featherweight around the neck. Great build quality – solid metal feel. I don’t like the AE-L and AF-L button being next to where you thumb is, but my fingers will learn. (Wish there was a wriststrap option that shipped with the camera too.) LOVE the display, and the ability to see the histogram data. Feels like my D300 in many ways.

Now to the images. Shot with the D300 and the P7000 looking up a tree trunk. Depth of field, image clarity and WB were surprisingly similar. Wow. Tried it again in both indoor and outdoor conditions, and saw little to no difference. In fact I preferred the P7000 images several times to the D300 – they looked better. After several hours of shooting both cameras, my post-purchase cognitive dissonance was gone and I am eager to learn more about my new traveling ‘friend’.

I do agree with the reviewers who note that the dials and settings aren’t particularly intuitive. The instruction manual is about on the scale of a DSLR. It also – for now – lacks the really long lens capability I’m looking for (I believe that Nikon will be introducing accessories soon, including a telephoto extender). I wish that the lens were faster in the lower end, and I wish that Nikon did a better job of removing high ISO noise (this is a criticism for non-full frame Nikon bodies in general; I’m hoping that RAW and post-processing will clean this up). But the advantages of the camera – DSLR-like photo quality, Nikon fit/finish and build, and a longer lens than comparable high-end P&S – make me believe that Nikon is going in the right direction and that this is a break from its previous P&S cameras.

If you don’t have size constraints (as I do), buy a DSLR – you will get more in the long run. If you want DSLR-like performance in a P&S, definitely take a look at the P7000.

————————-

UPDATE: I’ve put about 1,000 shots into the camera over the past week, including one day of a music festival where I shot all but maybe 3 shots with the P7000 (see the photos here -[...]data is on). Net: though I still have not figured out the nuances, you can get really good photos out of the camera, but it does require learning how to use its capabilities. It is slower than the DSLR, but not so bad that it gets in the way of getting the shot. The P7000 has developed an issue where the lens cover will not retract completely, which causes the corners of the frame to be shaded. So, this must be sorted out. This is unfortunately not what I expected from Nikon, even in the first release. I’ll report back in based upon what I find out, but for now I’m keeping the 5 star rating.

UPDATE (1 month later): The camera returned from Nikon in time to take to SFO. Nikon adjusted the shutter (works fine now) and the white balance. Interestingly the shot count was advanced about another thousand, so I trust they took the time to really check it out. I’ve finally figured out how to do quick aperture/shutter speed adjustments in manual mode, and am finding as I learn its controls and tricks, it’s easier and easier to get great shots. I’m amazed at the ‘night’ setting – never fails to render something really interesting and usable. White balance in this mode has been most impressive – even in darkened rooms and in street shots at night, the photos come out rendered in the right colors, in focus and with plenty of light. I’m keeping the 5-star rating.

Bad Review:

I really wanted to like the P7000 as I own Nikon DSLR’s, but I just can’t recommend it over the Canon G11 (or G12). First, the P7000 is slower than the G11 in most every way. The G11 zooms faster, scrolls through menus faster, magnifies photos you’ve already taken faster, and just feels snappier overall than the P7000. Shooting in RAW format is agonizingly slow on the P7000 and really only useful for landscapes as it takes 4 to 5 seconds to save each file, during which time the camera is locked up. Second, while I like the menu system and access to functions on the P7000 overall, it’s still a bit more of a disjointed experience than on the G11. For example, to change the white balance on the P7000 you turn the Quick dial on the left side to WB, push the button, and then scroll over to the desired setting with the Multi-Selector wheel on the right side; it requires that you use both hands to accomplish this task. On the G11 you simply press the function button with your right thumb and then use the control wheel to scroll to the desired setting; all major setting changes can be made with just your right thumb. Finally, the P7000 exhibits more noise at ISO 1600 than the G11 which is kind of the required threshold for shooting in low light in doors without flash or having to worry about camera shake.

Don’t get me wrong, the P7000 is a very good camera. If you want to use an external flash and you already own Nikon speedlights then it’s not a bad choice. But it just doesn’t quite measure up to the Canon G11 (or now G12).

Images can be projected up to 7 feet 10 inches at an image size of up to 47 inches diagonally. Sharper results with five advanced Nikon image stabilizing features*1
Nikon’s 5-way VR Image Stabilization System utilizes both Optical lens shift and Electronic VR image stabilization systems to help produce blur-free images. High ISO 6400*2 capability allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement and camera shake. And, Nikon’s original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically shoots a series of sequential frames and saves the one with the sharpest focus.
*1 The camera selects and uses only the features required to optimize each image.
*2 ISO 3200 and 6400 are available only for image sizes of 3M (2048 x 1536) or smaller.

Nikon’s Easy Auto Mode makes it faster and easier to capture the moment by eliminating the need to manually select a scene mode to match the intended shot.

Superior Image Quality

14.1-megapixel CCD sensor for stunning image quality.

5-way VR Image Stabilization System

Optical VR Image Stabilization by lens shift minimizes the effects of camera shake.

Hybrid VR Image stabilization by lens shift and electronic VR.

Motion Detection automatically detects moving subjects and adjusts shutter speed and ISO to compensate for camera shake and subject movement.

High ISO up to 6400 for optimum results when shooting in low light or photographing fast-moving subjects.

Nikon’s Best Shot Selector (BSS) automatically takes up to ten shots while the shutter is pressed, then selects and saves the sharpest image.

EXPEED C2 continues to expand the possibilities of photography with improved levels of image quality, fine detail and processing speed. Custom-optimized for each Coolpix model, Nikon’s renowned digital image processing engine ensures outstanding images.
